Alex Zanardi's comments on his Sebring test (July 8-9, 2000):
“It was good to drive the car again, to take some rust out of my muscles. I really enjoyed it. I’m glad that we made some progress in different areas, and Morris was happy because he thought he wanted to get my feedback, and it was good.
For me, I was going to come to Toronto anyway this weekend, to see some friends and to think about the possibility of, who knows, driving next year. That’s not a secret. Then, Morris called and said we’ve got a two-day test at Sebring. He knows me very well. We’ve been working together successfully, and I think he was interested more than anything in my feedback. He knows how I explain what the car is doing, and he thought if he would have me in the car, maybe I could help him to get some new ideas and do things not just related to purely setup, but things related to the engine. Maybe I could point out things that other drivers maybe did point out, but in different way.
“After I’ve been out of everything for basically eight months, to come back for me was particularly exciting. As for all the talk about me driving at Toronto, it makes me happy to hear because there are lot of people out there who can’t wait to see me back at a race. They kind of hoped that would happen in Toronto, since I’m here driving this weekend for Morris. But that was not the spirit of this test, certainly. If I wanted to drive, I didn’t have to wait for Tony (Kanaan), who is a dear friend of mine, to get hurt. I would’ve come to Morris and said, ‘I need to drive, please hire some more people, and let’s go racing.’ Since Tony couldn’t drive, and they had this test available, they said they’d rather have Alex in the car than anybody else. In three years, Morris and I had gotten to know each other so very well, not just on a friendship basis, but on a technical basis. We speak a language that is basically identical, and it’s allowed us to get some good results. I really hope we succeed in that this weekend. From my point of view, it was certainly a lot of fun to do it.”
