His best time of 21.425 seconds (an average of 158.954 mph) on the 1-mile tri-oval came in the afternoon session.
Zanardi's teammate Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard posted the 19th- and 25th- fastest times, respectively, in today's two sessions. His best lap of the day, at 21.472 seconds (an average of 158.607 mph) on the 1-mile tri-oval, came this morning.
Lola chassis dominated the top of the speed charts today, with Bruno Junqueira leading the way at 20.485 seconds (166.248 mph), followed by Max Papis at 20.653 (164.896 mph). Helio Castroneves was third at 20.680 (164.681 mph).
Temperatures exceeded 90 degrees today, but are expected to barely reach into the 70s on Saturday and Sunday. "I can say it doesn't look too pretty when you look at the timesheets. But for sure we learned a lot of things today and I believe there's a way to fix our situation. This was our first day with this package, ever, on a 1-mile oval, and I don't believe you can expect to go out and light the world on fire. We'll just take what we learned today, make all the necessary changes, and hopefully come out running well tomorrow morning. I have faith in this team."
