Four CART Stars Nominated For Writer's And Broadcaster's All-America Team

--CART Online (November 23) -- PPG Cup champion Alex Zanardi heads a group of four PPG CART World Series drivers who have been nominated for selection to the Open Wheel positions on the 1997 American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) All-America Team.

Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) is joined by PPG Cup runner-up Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda), Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) and Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) in being nominated for the All-America team, which will include two first team selections from each of six driving categories. Second Team and Honorable Mention selections will also be made.

The team will be honored at the annual AARWBA banquet, Jan. 10 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Long Beach, Calif. Zanardi, a second team All-American in 1996, led the PPG CART World Series with five victories (Long Beach, Cleveland, Michigan Speedway, Mid-Ohio, Road America) and four pole positions this season.

De Ferran earned seven podium finishes and a pair of poles during the season, scoring PPG Cup points in 14 of 17 events.

Blundell earned his first three PPG CART World Series career victories (Portland, Toronto, California Speedway) while Tracy won three consecutive events (Nazareth, Rio de Janeiro, Gateway) and added a pair of pole positions. Tracy is a four-time AARWBA selection, and a two-time first team pick. Zanardi and de Ferran are previous second team selections.
