Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard 22nd and 24th in today's two practice sessions, respectively, for Sunday's Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland. His best time of 59.540 seconds (an average of 127.336 mph) around the 2.106-mile temporary road course layout atop the Burke Lakefront Airport runways, came in the late session. Zanardi opened the day with a 60.112-second (126.125 mph) clocking in today's opening session.
Teammate Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard recorded the 15th- and 16th-fastest times, respectively, in today's two sessions. Kanaan's best time came in the second session at 59.154 seconds (128.167 mph), which was almost a full second faster than his best time in the first session. Cristiano da Matta was fastest on the day at 57.905 seconds (130.932 mph), followed by Helio Castroneves at 57.961 seconds (130.805 mph) and Kenny Brack 58.304 seconds (130/086 mph). The leaders all recorded their times in the late session.
Practice resumes Saturday morning with qualifying set for 4:45 p.m. EDT. The CART qualifying show will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Race time Sunday is 1 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast set for ABC-TV.
"I can't say that I'm happy at all. We had big problems all day long with everything ... even the radios. I couldn't get a clear lap with all the traffic out there. I know it's the same for everyone, but I just couldn't get a break. People are chopping you off left and right. And they go off the track and bring dirt and grass back onto the track. That's not right. It's a big mess out there. So now we have to take this messy situation and make it better. That's all I have to say."
