FONTANA, Calif. - Zakspeed Motorsport and Forsythe Racing start as "Team Zakspeed Forsythe Racing" in the CART FedEx Championship Series, beginning with the 2001 season as a partnership with equal rights.

Zakspeed Forsythe Racing will be based in Ohio. The team will start with two cars, driven by Bryan Herta and a top German pilot. This will be the first time a German driver on a German team has participated in one of the most spectacular racing series in the world.

Zakspeed Motorsport, the most successful German racing team for the past 30 years in Europe, has earned numerous titles in national and international touring cars, as well as racing in Formula 1 from 1985 to 1990. Zakspeed also successfully participated in American motorsports during the '80s.

Team owner Peter Zakowski is glad to come back to the United States.

"The participation in the CART series means for Zakspeed not only to come back to the USA but to take part in the most sportive and economically interesting racing series in the world through the globalization of the CART series in Mexico, Japan, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Great Britain and especially German [Eurospeedway Lausitz, Sept. 15, 2001]," Zakowski said. "This is motorsport on the highest international level. And for Forsythe Racing, we have got the best partner to be found."

Forsythe Racing has been a steady part of American motorsports for the past 20 years. Next to the Indy Lights and Atlantic series, the Forsythe Racing Player's Team made a big impression in CART, starting with Jacques Villeneuve as pilot. In addition, Gerald Forsythe, founder and owner of Forsythe Racing, serves on the board of directors of CART Inc. as well as in the new British American Racing Formula 1 team, and has become one of the most influential entrepreneurs in open-wheel racing today.

As the first German/European team ever, Zakspeed Forsythe Racing will start the season on March 11, 2001, in Monterrey, Mexico.
