COMMITTEE FORMED TO FIND SUCCESSOR TO CART CHIEF STEWARD WALLY DALLENBACH
DETROIT (April 9, 1999) - An eight-member committee has been formed to find a successor to longtime Championship Auto Racing Teams Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach, who has announced his intention to step down at the end of the 1999 season.
The committee will meet for the first time this weekend at Motegi, Japan, site of Round 2 of this year's FedEx Championship Series, Saturday's Firestone Firehawk 500. Interviews are expected to begin in late May, and the selection process is scheduled to be completed by mid-June, in order to give Dallenbach's successor more than half of the 1999 FedEx Championship Series season to learn on the job.
Committee members are: CART Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Craig; Executive Vice President of Racing Operations Tim Mayer; team owners Barry Green of Team KOOL Green, Carl Hogan of Hogan Racing and Derrick Walker of Walker Racing; McDonald's Championship Racing Team president Steve Horne; 1996 FedEx Championship Series driving champion Jimmy Vasser; and Dallenbach, who has served since 1980 as the only Chief Steward in CART history, filling the lead official's role at nearly 300 FedEx Championship Series events.
"It goes without saying that CART and the FedEx Championship Series would not be anywhere near what they are today without the contributions of Wally Dallenbach," Craig said. "Wally has been here from the start and he is universally respected in the motorsports community for his integrity, his unflagging sense of fairness and his devotion to our sport.
"Those qualities will not easily be replaced," Craig continued. "Whoever succeeds Wally will have big shoes to fill and will be a critical member of CART's race management team for many years to come.
"A number of candidates have already expressed interest. We're looking for as many qualified people as possible, from which one will be selected to fill this highly demanding position."
Qualified individuals interested in the Chief Steward's position should contact Craig in writing at Championship Auto Racing Teams, 755 West Big Beaver Rd., Suite 800, Troy, Mich. 48084.
