GIL DE FERRAN ...
GIL DE FERRAN # 5 VALVOLINE/CUMMINS - HONDA/REYNARD/GOODYEAR
What: TARGET GRAND PRIX Round Fifteenth of the 20-races FedEx Championship Series for the PPG Cup Weather: Clear, warm, 82-degrees F
Derrick Walker -Team Owner: " Chicago, great new track, testing restrictions set our program back, The tire companies selection boiled down to an estimate of what the conditions would be like, in our case we struggled all weekend to get the speed out of the package. The race was a disappointing affair, lack of car balance, grip and believe it or not pit lane speed limiter produced a lack luster performance."
GIL de FERRAN # 5 Valvoline/Cummins/Walker Racing Honda Started 19th, finished 13th
Gil de Ferran: "It was one of those days where you just had to get the car to the end and live to fight another day. It was a long day. The car handled okay, but the two pit lane speed violations killed us. I don't know what it was, the telemetry said we were fine on speed. If it weren't for those, we would definitely have finished in the points."

Gil de Ferran: "This may be a tough weekend for us. With a new race track, the tires companies have to make their best guess on compounds and the like without the real data. I'm afraid Goodyear was a bit too conservative in their planning, and we are having a tough time getting the tires up to temperature. We'll put our heads together tonight, and see if we can come up with some idea to help tomorrow."

Note: The top 22 qualifiers were separated by less than one second. # 5 de Ferran's top speed: 156.561 mph; 23.661 seconds, second lap.
Gil de Ferran: " It was a pretty uneventful qualifying run for us. The track was still a little bit slippery, Richie's (Hearn) oil held us back a maybe a couple of tenths, but the car ran pretty much the way we expected from this morning. It's been a difficult weekend for us without being able to come here and test prior to the event and choose a tire specifically for this event. It was always going to be a fifty-fifty chance that the estimation might not turn out to be right and I think the tires came out a little bit on the hard side. That is making a little difficult for us to get up to speed and find the ultimate lap time. We will keep working on the car. We're not giving up and we'll see what happens tomorrow."
