Vasser and Team Rahal pleased with progress at second Sebring test
HILLIARD, OH . . . Team Rahal and Shell driver Jimmy Vasser took another significant step in their quest for the 2002 CART Championship with two days of testing at Sebring International Raceway on Wednesday and Thursday. The test allowed the team to build on the solid groundwork laid at their initial Sebring test two weeks ago.
Most encouraging for the Shell team is the fact that Vasser topped his previous fast time by nearly a full second. Once again the "unofficial" lap times placed the Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola among the quickest cars on the track during the two-day test.
Team Rahal logged over 300 miles during the two days as the team continued to gain familiarity with the Lola B2/00 chassis and the 2002 version of the Ford-Cosworth XF engine. This was also the team's second test with the new Bridgestone Potenza tire that all CART teams will utilize in 2002.
"It has been encouraging to be as quick as we have been at the first couple of tests considering our main focus has not been on speed but trying different set-ups and building an understanding of the capabilities of this package," said Vasser, the 1996 CART champion. "There is a sense of unfinished business about this team and you can feel the hunger in everyone that is involved with the operation. The atmosphere around this team and the attention to detail has made my transition to Team Rahal easy."
The next scheduled test for Team Rahal in preparation for the March 10 season opener in Monterrey, Mexico will be at CART Sneak Preview 2002 at Laguna Seca Raceway on February 7-10. CART Sneak Preview 2002 is the FedEx Championship Series official kickoff to the season. The four-day event features two days of media functions, including the CART All-Star Celebration, followed by two days of on-track testing.
Team Rahal is a franchise member of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). Headquartered in Hilliard, Ohio, the team owned by three-time CART Champion Bobby Rahal and CBS LATE SHOW host David Letterman, currently fields a Championship Car for 1996 CART champion Jimmy Vasser in the CART FedEx Championship Series and an entry in the Indianapolis 500. The 65-member team enjoys primary sponsorship from the Shell Oil Company in CART and the Miller Brewing Company for the Indy 500.
