Molson Indy Vancouver Saturday Practice
The 75 minute practice session started with most of the field taking to the track. Fittipaldi was the first to complete a lap.
The session was almost immediately red-flagged when Gordon spun and stalled coming out of turn 10. Carpentier also stopped and needed to be towed back in. When the session restarted, Fittipaldi started trying to put in fast laps. Other fast times were put in by Kanaan, de Ferran, Tracy, Lehto and Vasser with times in the 1:08 to 1:20 range. With an hour to go, the order was Fittipaldi (1:06.688), Pruett (1:08.328), Castro-Neves (1:08.432), Rahal (1:08.588) and de Ferran (1:08.597).
In the next few minutes, the action really picked up. The times were going down quickly and the positions were changing constantly. Gordon went up to 4th. Papis got 8th. Lehto got 3rd. Andretti got 2nd. Papis got 6th. Kanaan got 2nd. Hearn got 3rd. Zanardi got 1st. Tracy got 2nd. Blundell got 3rd. Kanaan got 2nd. And that just part of it. And all in seven minutes. The times were mostly in the 1:06s. Zanardi and Franchitti led the field with 1:05.306 and 1:05.777.
Then the field settled down and no one improved their times for a few minutes. Then, Fittipaldi got up to 3rd and Kanaan improved to 5th. Moore went out and moved up to 10th and then 6th. Fittipaldi went out again but couldn't improve. Zanardi and Franchitti went out again, but couldn't improve.
The session was red-flagged with 30 minutes to go to pull Gordon out of turn 8, a place where many drivers went off. The order at that point was Zanardi, Franchitti, Fittipaldi, Andretti, Kanaan, Moore, Herta, Castro-Neves, Gordon, Rahal and Tracy. Lehto was trying to get in some fast laps when the session was red-flagged. The session went green again with 25 minutes to go. Almost immediately after the restart, it was red-flagged again when Papis put his car into the tire wall coming out of turn 8. It took a few minutes to pull him out of the tires and restart the session again.
The times came started coming down again. de Ferran went to 12th with 1:05.455. Rahal went up to 8th, then 3rd. Kanaan stopped on the track at the exit of turn 12 and pulled into the run-off area.
In the last two minutes, Tracy knocked Franchitti out of second place with a 1:06.522 and Fittipaldi knocked Zanardi out of first with a 1:05.257. Zanardi and Franchitti were both on the track, but neither could improve. The session ended with Fernandez going wide, hitting the wall hard coming out of turn 14, bouncing across the track and hitting the opposite wall, then bouncing back again.
