Tracy leads opening day in Vancouver.
Paul Tracy secured at least a front row start for Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver and scored another championship point by taking his Team KOOL Green Honda to the provisional pole in first round qualifying today in Vancouver, Canada.
Teammate Dario Franchitti also headed the timesheets earlier in the session, before dropping to fourth in the final minutes. Michael Andretti, who announced this week he will assume majority ownership of the Team Green operation at the end of the year, also had an encouraging qualifying performance to end the day seventh.
Shinji Nakano, Fernandez Racing and Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan qualified along side one another in 11th and 12th, separated by just three hundredths of a second. Adrian Fernandez struggled with set-up and balance of his Honda and finished 18th overall.
The Team Green drivers built on a good morning practice session, where Franchitti and Tracy were second and third quickest, respectively. Live television coverage on the Speed Channel cable/satellite network starts tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Paul Tracy (#26 Team KOOL Green Honda) Provisional Pole Qualifier: "I think we have a good handle on the car now. Today was just a battle to get a clear lap in traffic. On my first run I was plagued by not being able to get a clear lap. Then we waited on the second run until there was only about six minutes to go. The lap that I set the pole time on was really only like a warm-up lap, about 80%. We were finally lucky to have some luck go our way for once. Now is the time that we can pick up some points and stay in the fight. We've got some really good momentum going these last three races or so. I think we still have more in the car, so we'll see what happens."
