The practice session started with Michael Andretti and Greg Moore first out. They were followed by Lehto, Jourdain, Jones and Castro-Neves and were putting in times around 1:14. It started with Fittipaldi taking P1, breaking Lehto's 25 minutes hold on it. Then, Zanardi took 2nd. Then, Castro-Neves took 2nd, knocking Lehto down another place. Meanwhile, Tracy jumped up to 5th. With less than a minute to go, Zanardi took P1, but 30 seconds later, Fittipaldi took it and kept it to the end.

This was the first session on the new Vancouver circuit, which forms a backwards "C" shape, is 1.82 miles long and has 14 turns. In this sessions, many cars made use of the escape road at the end of the long straight as drivers were familiarizing themselves with the new course.
