It started with Fittipaldi taking P1, breaking Lehto's 25 minutes hold on it. Then, Zanardi took 2nd. Then, Castro-Neves took 2nd, knocking Lehto down another place. Meanwhile, Tracy jumped up to 5th. With less than a minute to go, Zanardi took P1, but 30 seconds later, Fittipaldi took it and kept it to the end.
This was the first session on the new Vancouver circuit, which forms a backwards "C" shape, is 1.82 miles long and has 14 turns. Final lap times in this session were in the 1:06 to 1:08 range and lap speeds ranged from 92 to 98 mph. In this sessions, many cars made use of the escape road at the end of the long straight as drivers were familiarizing themselves with the new course.
