Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes) ended a lengthy wait for his first FedEx Championship Series victory by winning the 1997 Molson Indy Vancouver at Concord Pacific Place. Gugelmin took the lead after contact between leader Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) and Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) on the 86th of 100 laps, which sent Herta into a tire barrier.
Gugelmin inherited the lead and went on to a 2.872-second victory over Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) in his 67th career FedEx Championship Series start. Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) finished third, his seventh podium finish in 10 events. Gugelmin averaged 92.228 miles per hour and led 18 of 100 laps, second to Vasser, who led a race-high 46.
Zanardi, who finished fourth, exited Vancouver with a series-high 181 PPG Cup points, followed by de Ferran with 144 and Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) with 121. Following the race, Zanardi was fined $25,000 and put on probation by CART Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach for rough driving in conjunction with the Herta incident.
