HOMESTEAD, Fla. (February 10, 2000) - Dario Franchitti, who was involved in a single-car accident during the opening day of CART Spring Training at Homestead-Miami Speedway, continues to recover from his injuries at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

The initial report on Wednesday evening from Dr. Steve Olvey, CART director of medical affairs, indicated Franchitti sustained three non-displaced fractures of the pelvis, and several small contusions of the brain. Olvey said that no surgery will be required for any of the injuries, but Franchitti is scheduled to remain hospitalized for a few days.

On Thursday morning, according to Dr. Steve Olvey, CART director of medical affairs, Franchitti spent Wednesday night in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU). This morning he had a normal neurological examination and he is in good spirits. He may be moved out of the TICU later today and may be released from the hospital by Saturday.

"We'll probably try to get him up on crutches later today or tomorrow morning," said Olvey. "He will undergo intensive physical therapy for about six weeks so that he doesn't lose agility or muscle mass. It will be three to four weeks before any decision will be made as to whether he can drive at the season opener at Homestead on March 26."

The initial data from the incident points to a mechanical failure in the right rear spindle. "There is no history of failure in this area," according to Kim Green, TKG general manager. "We are working with our technical partners at Reynard to evaluate the components.

Franchitti, runner-up for the series championship last season for Team KOOL Green, was injured after his car made contact with the wall in Turn 3 with approximately 10 minutes remaining in the final session on Wednesday afternoon.
