Two Named To Honda Indy Board

(January 9, 1998) - Two prominent Australian businessmen have been appointed to the governing board for the Honda Indy, the FedEx Championship Series event contested annually on Australia's Gold Coast. Sports Minister Bob Gibbs announced the appointments of John Cowley and Grant Bowie to the board for the race, which will be held Oct. 14-17 in Surfers Paradise, Queensland. Cowley, managing director of Queensland Newspapers Pty. Ltd., was named chairman of Gold Coast Events Co. Pty. Ltd., which operates the Honda Indy in partnership with sports marketing firm IMG.

Cowley replaces Terry Jackman, who resigned the chairmanship following the 1998 Honda Indy to concentrate on his new duties as chair of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corp. Bowie becomes a director on the Gold Coast Events board. He is general manager of Conrad Jupiters hotel and resort on the Gold Coast as well as senior vice president (Australia) for Hilton Hotels Corp. and Queensland president of the Tourism Council of Australia. "Both Mr. Cowley and Mr. Bowie are highly respected businessmen who will bring a wealth of professional expertise to Queensland's premier sporting and tourism event," Gibbs said. Cowley and Bowie also become representatives on the Indy Car Australia Partnership Management Committee.
