The CART teams are headed to Twin Ring Motegi, Japan for the next round of racing in the CART FedEx Championship Series.

Twin Ring Motegi is a 3.0 mile, 14 turn road course. It has "twin rings" -- thus its name. Ring 1 is a road course and ring 2 is an American-style oval. The oval features two straightaways connected to corners of varying radius. The longest straight is almost 2000 feet. The banking around the track varies from 3 degrees to 10 degrees.

Adrian Fernandez, winner of the two races previously held at Twin Ring Motegi, is hoping to set a record as the first driver in the FedEx Championship Series to win the first three events contested at a CART venue.

Meet the Team:

Newman/Haas Racing started with a formidable driver, Mario Andretti, in 1983. They finished 3rd that year, followed by the championship the following year.

Carl Haas and Paul Newman are both racers at heart. Carl Haas raced sports cars in the 50's and 60's. Paul Newman started racing sports cars in the 60's. He's still racing. At the age of 75, he competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona this year.

In addition to their racing teams, Haas has an auto import business, is on the board of directors of CART, SCCA and Road America. He is also the race organizer for Milwaukee and Houston. This year he is the supplier for the Lola chassis.

Paul Newman is still making movies and overseeing the charitable distribution of the funds from his "Newman's Own" food products.

Michael Andretti and Christian Fittipaldi drive for Newman/Haas Racing.

Some 2000 Facts and Figures ---

There are four engine manufacturers participating in the 2000 FedEx Championship Series: Honda, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. Honda has participated since 1994 and has won three manufacturer's championships, four driver's championships and three rookie of the year championships.

Ford Cosworth has been racing in CART since 1992 and won both the driver's and manufacturer's championship in 1995.

Mercedes Benz, from 1994 through 1999, has won 19 races, 19 poles and one championship.

The only tire company is Bridgestone/Firestone.

Racing Talk -- What does Drafting mean?

As race cars move around a track, they produce a partial vacuum in their wake. By tucking in behind the car in front, a driver can be literally "sucked" along behind the car ahead. This process improves fuel efficiency for both cars. The rear car loses downforce, so it also loses drag.
