MCI Racing And "Mad Max" Part Of Motegi Test

CART Online (November 4) -- The Arciero-Wells/MCI Racing team just returned from the CART Open Test at the new Twin Ring Motegi oval in Japan where 14 CART drivers participated before a crowd of more than 11,000. The open test was in preparation for the inaugural race at Twin Ring Motegi, the Budweiser 500K, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 1998.

Driving the No. 25 MCI Racing Reynard-Toyota, Papis recorded 173 laps on the 1.549-mile oval located approximately 60 miles northeast of Tokyo. His quickest lap of the weekend was 203.800 miles per hour.

"We had a bit of trouble on the second day because we had some engine problems that prevented us from running," said Papis. "We have been progressing on our setup of the car. Engine-wise, we tried a new development that showed the way we can go for the future.

"The facility here is great," continued Papis. "They have built a really fantastic oval. The fans are really loyal and enthusiastic about having CART racing over here. I look forward to returning and showing the MCI Toyota car potential here where my plan and goal is to run in the top five next March."
