TORONTO - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy overcame adversity to finish sixth in today's Molson Indy, while teammate Dario Franchitti suffered a mechanical problem and failed to finish.
Tracy started eighth but lost a lap early when he spun while chasing down Oriol Servia. He fought his way back into contention with hard driving, attrition and savvy pit strategy. His sixth place finish earned Tracy his first points since his third-place result in Nazareth on May 6, and moved him into 10th place in the championship with 48 points.
Franchitti started sixth, was fourth by the end of the first lap and moved up to second place on lap 18 when he passed Kenny Brack in Turn 3. Unfortunately, an oil leak caused him to drop out of the race on lap 32. Franchitti leaves Toronto fourth in the championship with 65 points.
Michael Andretti won the 95-lap race by 2.741 seconds over Alex Tagliani, with Adrian Fernandez taking third place, an additional 1.654 seconds back.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 8th / Finished 6th / 10th in points with 48 points)
"I'm really disappointed with the way I drove today. I took myself out of the race early and eliminated any chance of scoring big points. In the end, we just got lucky with a lot of guys crashing. On the first lap, I got pushed out by Fernandez and then a freight train of guys came by. Then on the second restart, I just locked up the brakes and slid into the back of (Oriol) Servia and basically screwed up his race and mine. In the end, It was good to get some points and it gives the team a little boost, but I'm just disappointed that I took myself out of the race so early. Team KOOL Green gave me a good car today and we just didn't get the job done. Then the rest of the race I was just fighting for every position I could. With 15 laps to go, I really didn't think we'd be scoring any points today. "
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 6th / Finished 24th / 4th in point standings with 65 points)
"We had an oil leak in this morning's warm up and we changed the engine for the race. But then I was losing oil the whole race. The warning lights were on and the oil pressure was dropping as there was less and less oil in the tank. Eventually it just ran out of oil and the engine seized. I know these things are going to happen, but you sure hate it when you're running well. The KOOL car was strong today and we'd worked our way up to second place and were just biding our time. The only problem we had was a little bit of understeer, but we were going to fix that on the first stop."
