TORONTO, Canada (July 13, 2001) - Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Toyota) was second overall in the first day of practice for Sunday's Molson Indy through the streets of Toronto.

Fittipaldi turned in a lap of more than 107 mph in posting the time as the fastest Toyota in today's practice sessions. Fittipaldi ran in the top six in each of the day's CART practice sessions with his second in the afternoon following a sixth this morning. His Newman-Haas Racing teammate Cristiano da Matta (Texaco/Havoline/Kmart Toyota) was eighth overall after posting seventh quick in both Friday sessions.

Jimmy Vasser (Visteon/Patrick Toyota) was strong in the morning session with a fourth, but ran into a variety of problems in the afternoon and wasn't able to register a time. The Californian finished the day in 16th overall, just behind teammate Roberto Moreno (Visteon Toyota -13th) and first-year driver Tora Takagi (Pioneer Toyota - 15th).

Qualifying for Sunday's feature event is set to begin Saturday at 1:45 (EST) with ESPN2's tape-delayed broadcast beginning at 5:00 p.m. (EDT). Sunday's Molson Indy is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT and will be aired live by ESPN.

Christian Fittipaldi, #6 Kmart Toyota: "I feel pretty good. I have to admit, I had a pretty trouble-free and easy day. We ran old tires this morning, so I didn't go real fast, but the car had a good balance. This afternoon we put on new tires and did a fast lap. I'm pretty confident. I think we have a pretty good setup for tomorrow. In Toronto, it's definitely very important to start up front. If you're starting in the top four or top six, you have a nice shot at winning the race."
