Junqueira First, Second In Opening Practice Sessions

FONTANA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2001) - Rookie Bruno Junqueira (Target Toyota) topped the morning charts and was then second in the afternoon session in preparation for Sunday's Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota - practice for Sunday's Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland - the eighth round for the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series.

"The car was very good today," said Junqueira. "Toyota has continued to make improvements since the last 500-mile race at Michigan and we made really good power today. I'm looking forward to qualifying tomorrow and the race on Sunday."

Junqueira was joined in the top five for the day by Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Memo Gidley, who placed fifth overall. Gidley led much of the race at Michigan - the sister track to California Speedway.

A second Toyota-powered rookie ran comfortably in the top 10 today as Tora Takagi (Pioneer Toyota) was second in the morning session and ninth overall.

Qualifying for Sunday's feature event is set to begin Saturday at 2:15 (EST). Sunday's Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota is scheduled to begin at 3:30/12:30 (EST/PST) and will be aired live by ESPN.

Note: Toyota will be seeking a program-high sixth win on Sunday, as well as the manufacturer's second 500-mile victory. Previously, Juan Montoya won the 2000 Michigan 500 Presented by Toyota.
