Dario Franchitti of Team KOOL Green turned in a dominant drive to record his first victory of the FedEx Championship Series season in the 1999 Molson Indy before a crowd of 72,500 at Exhibition Place. After starting from the outside pole position, Franchitti (KOOL Honda Reynard) took the lead from polesitter Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Honda Reynard) heading into the third turn on the opening lap. Franchitti never relinquished it for the balance of the event, leading all 95 laps and becoming the first driver to accomplish that feat since his 1998 victory at Houston. Franchitti averaged 85.897 miles per hour and finished 2.624 seconds ahead of Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard), whose runner-up effort gave Team KOOL Green a sweep of the top two positions. Christian Fittipaldi (Big Kmart Ford Swift) finished third for his second consecutive podium result following his first career FedEx Championship Series victory at Road America a week earlier. Meanwhile, rookie Juan Montoya (Target Honda Reynard) finished 22nd due to contact, but managed to maintain his FedEx Championship Series points lead, which was trimmed to seven points (113-106) over Franchitti. Fittipaldi's podium finish moved him to third in the championship, with 96 points.
