Additional qualifying rules for the CART Fed/Ex Championship Series include a maximum of 15 timed laps per session with a guaranteed 45 minutes (of a 60 minute session) of green flag time at road course events.

The seventh race of the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship will take place on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Three rookies pegged the best times in qualifying. Jon Fogarty had the quickest lap at 1:05.578 with an average speed of 96.343 mph. Luis Diaz (1:06.047, 95.659) and Sepp Koster (1:06.203, 95.432) finished second and third.

In the practice session earlier in the day, Michael Valiante was fastest on his 21st lap of 23, posting a time of 1:06.789 (94.596 mph). Valiante finished fourth in qualifying. Fogarty of Dorricott Racing leads the championship with 74 points, while Valiante of Lynz Racing is one point back.

In the Barber Dodge Pro Series, the first qualifying session for round 5 saw championship leader A.J. Allmendinger take top spot on his 19th and final lap with a time of 1:12.033, averaging 87.710 mph.

Qualifying session 1 in the Formula F-1600 series saw Ashley Taws clinch the fastest lap in a time of 1:19.471 (average 79.500 mph).

Jim Lancevich of Fastline Motorsports set the quickest time in the CASCAR practice at 1:20.106.

Attendance for day one of the Molson Indy weekend was 44,018, the fourth-best first-day turnout in the event's 17 year history. The Friday attendance record of 45,236 was set in 1999.

Former CART and Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi, who lost both of his legs in a racing accident last year in Germany, was in the pits during the CART qualifying, greeting old friends.

Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis withdrew from the Molson Indy this morning. Team owner Tom Wieringa quietly announced last week that he was pulling the team from competition, possibly for the remainder of the season. Sigma has only one car and approximately a tenth of the budget of the top CART teams. Papis began the season by winning the Rolex 24-Hours of Daytona. Participating in only five races, Papis amassed 32 points and sat in fifth place in the drivers championship. He finished second in Long Beach and Milwaukee.

CART Chief Steward, Wally Dallenbach has declared that the Molson Indy will be subject to a maximum race time. The time limit for this race will be 2 hours and fifteen minutes (2:15).

In the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship practice session, Michael Valiante of Lynx Racing posted a quickest lap time of 1:06.789, averaging 94.596 mph.

Jean-Phillipe Papineau was fastest in the practice session of Formula 1600, completing a lap of the circuit in 1:21.074 (average speed 77.928 mph).

Second-year driver Christian Szymczak posted the best time in the practice session of the Barber Dodge Pro Series with a lap speed of 1:12.515.

Heat was a concern earlier in the week in Toronto. However, at 9:55 a.m. today, the weather in the city was 66° (19° C) with 60% relative humidity. Skies are clear and the expected high this afternoon is 73° (23° C)
