Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) put together a dominant performance to earn his second CART career victory in the 1997 Molson Indy at Exhibition Place. Blundell took the lead from the outside pole on the opening lap when first-time pole-sitter Dario Franchitti (Hogan Motor Leasing, Inc. Reynard Mercedes) was involved in contact with third-place starter Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) heading into the first turn.
Blundell went on to lead 93 of 95 laps while finishing 0.659 seconds ahead of Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), who posted his second consecutive runner-up effort at Toronto. Andre Ribeiro (LCI Reynard Honda), in his second race after switching from a Lola to Reynard chassis, finished third. Blundell's victory was his second in three events.
A month earlier, he had scored a dramatic win over Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) at Portland in the closest finish (0.027 seconds) in Champ Car history. Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) continued in the PPG Cup points lead with 109 after a 10th-place finish, followed by Zanardi with 106 and Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) with 103.
