CART FedEx Championship Series - Round 8 of 20
Molson Indy Toronto at Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
July 5-7, 2002
Race Distance: 195.56 miles (112 laps around the 1.755-mile temporary street course).
Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered nearly 1,000 tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio.
* Dry-condition ("slick") tires: Each car receives seven sets for use throughout practice, qualifying and the race. The tire specification this weekend is the Bridgestone street course version with the most grip. It was used previously this season at Long Beach.
* Wet-condition ("rain") tires: Bridgestone Motorsport supplies each car up to four new sets of rain tires per weekend on road and street courses. In addition, under a recent CART rule, teams may bring two additional sets of rain tires per car that they received at a previous event but did not use. Since Bridgestone is utilizing a single wet-tire spec at all road/street races in 2002, the tires can be carried over to another event without a performance variance. CART's decision permitting teams to carry the additional rain sets assures drivers a sufficient number should wet conditions persist on a race weekend.
The Official Tire of CART: Bridgestone joins the FedEx Championship Series in 2002 as the Official Tire of CART and, as such, will supply all teams with Bridgestone Potenza racing radials. While it is Bridgestone's first year in this series, the tire manufacturer boasts an enviable racing heritage spanning four decades.
Quote from Dario Franchitti, Team Kool Green driver, on the tire performance this year: "Bridgestone did a great job. They do such a great job with the tires, you can run it from the first lap to the last lap, and it's the same. So the tires are not going to move (to a decreased performance level)."
Quote from Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Executive Director: "With sentiments like those from Dario, it's easy to see why the performance of the Bridgestone tires in their debut season in CART have been such a given. Dario is not alone in his feelings. Many of the drivers have told us that our tires are 'too good' and that the Potenzas can help mask deficiencies in car setups. It shows Bridgestone has taken on the task of supplying all teams in the series very seriously and that we are committed to delivering the most consistent and durable tires in CART history. Evidence of that should be on display this weekend in Toronto, where we'll utilize a proven tire specification that will again increase the level of competition on the track and the level of enjoyment for fans watching the race."
