August 16, 2000, Indianapolis, Indiana: American driver Memo Gidley is pleased to announce a new nickname for his beloved Della Penna pit crew: THE RED MENACE. The moniker was selected by Memo's fans, who have been voting since last Friday on five possible names posted on the front page of CART.COM.
"This crew has a lot of skill and a lot of heart, and I'm delighted to give them a name they can wear with pride," beamed Gidley. "I expect the RED MENACE to push me towards the front in each of the remaining seven races this season, and I thank my fans for all the good wishes they included in their emailed votes."
Votes were received from the United States, Canada, Colombia, England and Australia, and the winning "Red Menace" ran neck and neck with "Pennamaniacs" throughout the six-day voting period. A number of write-in suggestions were received, ranging in quality from witty to sophomoric, including Crimson Flashes, Memomen, Fetchmen, Memo and the Mechanics, Methanol Maniacs, Memo's' FetchOfanatics, Memo's Red Army, Gidley's Gearbox Gorillas and Gidley's Jack-Aces.
Over the last two seasons, Gidley has driven with four CART teams as a substitute, but his ten-race engagement with Della Penna Motorsports marks his first opportunity to call a pit crew his own. Last weekend the Della Penna crew sported Gidley's round "MG" logo on the sides of their race-day helmets, and this weekend he hopes to begin providing the team with signs and clothing based on the newly-designed RED MENACE logo. [a JPEG file of the logo will arrive attached to a separate email]
Gidley and his crew are rapidly becoming family, and their growing friendship is producing tangible results on the racetrack. Gidley has scored points in each of his three starts with the Della Penna team, a feat matched by only Michael Andretti and Adrian Fernandez over the last three races. After last week's Mid Ohio event, Gidley praised his crew for providing him with "the best prepared, most reliable car of my career in Champ Cars."
Gidley and the RED MENACE are eager to attack the classic Road America circuit, having enjoyed the benefit of two full days of testing at the track earlier this month. Keep an eye out for Gidley's crimson #10 DirecTV Toyota-Reynard-Firestone and THE RED MENACE this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
