Texas Motor Speedway 1.482-mile oval Inaugural Event
Car #16 Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Firestone
Time: 23.120 seconds
Speed: 230.761 mph
After struggling with minor mechanical gremlins on Friday, Michel Jourdain, Jr. and the Herdez Bettenhausen team returned to the Texas Motor Speedway today for a final practice session and qualifying for tomorrow's 600-kilometer event.
The morning practice was run without incident as Michel and the team focused on simulated qualifying runs with minimal amounts of fuel. In the 45-minute session, they completed five runs with a best single lap time of 22.892 seconds (233.161 mph).
Qualifying took place this afternoon during very warm conditions (95 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature) and sunny skies.
Michel Jourdain Jr.
"Well, we are a little disappointed with our qualifying position but we gave it everything we had! The balance on the car was very good and I was flat the whole way around the track but the speed just wasn't quite there.
I have to say thanks to the Herdez Bettenhausen crew - they were here very late last night trying to make sure that we had all of our equipment ready for today. I was here at the track with them until about 11 p.m. and they were still working!
For tomorrow, we'll just have to see how it is to pass out there. I think I have a good racecar and it is a very long race!"
