Alex Zanardi, at speed on an oval track today for the first time since the 1998 season, opened practice for Sunday's Firestone Firehawk 600, Presented by Pioneer, with the 10th-fastest time in today's first of two practice sessions. His best lap of the day in #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard was an effort of 23.165 seconds (an average of 230.313 mph) over the 1.5-mile high-banked oval at Texas Motor Speedway. Zanardi followed that up with a lap of 23.468 seconds (227.339 mph), which placed him 23rd in the order during the afternoon session.

Mo Nunn Racing teammate Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard recorded the second-fastest lap of the day this morning, a 22.845-second effort (233.539 mph) that was bested only by the 22.821-second lap (233.785 mph) posted in today's afternoon session by Kenny Brack. Paul Tracy had the third-fastest time of the day at 22.396 seconds (232.612 mph) set in the afternoon session.

Practice resumes at 9:30 a.m. CDT Saturday with single-car qualifying set to begin at 1:30 p.m. The CART qualifying show will air on ESPN2 at 1 a.m. EDT Sunday. Race time Sunday is set for 2 p.m. CDT and it will be broadcast live by ESPN.

ALEX ZANARDI

"It's certainly been going from one extreme to the other for me so far. I hadn't been on an oval since 1998, and then here we go on probably the most impressive oval I've been on in the whole world. It's very fast. But things are going well, I think, and the feeling is coming back slowly but certainly. We tried a lot of things, especially in the afternoon practice, and I think the key will be to find just that right balance on the car to help us deal with the bumpiness of the track. The banking is sure doing it' s job well, though. It really keeps the car on the track. By the time it matters on Sunday, we will be in good shape. It's going to be a difficult race because the track is narrow and the speeds are high. But it's a long race and we'll have a lot of time to get the job done."
