Champ Car sets team travel roster limitations for 2004.

INDIANAPOLIS (February 2, 2004) -- In the first of what will be a number of positive rule changes for the 2004 Champ Car World Series season, the series today established roster limitations for each of its teams in an effort to help the teams control racing costs.

For the 2004 season, each team in the Champ Car World Series will be allowed up to 15 working crew members per entered car per event. These 15 members will be the only team personnel permitted to work on the race car during a Champ Car weekend. Team owners, drivers, public relations and marketing personnel do not count toward the roster limitations.

The move is intended to lessen the financial burden on Champ Car teams by limiting their travel expenditures, and is a step toward leveling the playing field for each of the teams. The chosen 15 crew members will be designated with a special annual credential, which may be transferred throughout the team as long as the limit of 15 crew personnel per event is not exceeded.

"The roster limitation rule mirrors what we see in the NFL and the NBA," said Champ Car Senior Vice-President of Operations John Lopes. "Much of the attraction of sports is in a team pitting its top personnel against the best that its opponents can muster. We believe Champ Car fans will be engaged by the added competition that this rule provides."

The new rule will be referred to as rule 6.4.1 in the soon-to-be-published 2004 Champ Car Rule Book.
