MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (June 1, 2001) - CART fans may be seeing double Saturday as Wisconsin locals and twin brothers Paul and Morgan Hamm, members of the 2000 US Men's Olympic Gymnastic Team and Team Texaco Training Club, will be performing a repertoire of gymnastic feats.
Not only will fans be treated to something extraordinary in the world of sports when CART opens up it's "locker room" for an all driver autograph session from 5-5:30 PM on Saturday, June 2, but the fans will also have the opportunity to witness Olympians and Waukesha natives performing Olympic-caliber gymnastics while waiting to obtain autographs from their favorite CART heroes. Among the six events that make up the sport men's gymnastics, the Hamm brothers will be demonstrating their skills upon the pommel horse. The routine will consist of two demonstrations lasting 15 minutes apiece as well as an opportunity to get an autograph and meet the local favorites and 2001 graduates from Waukesha High School.
Accomplished in the sport of gymnastics, Morgan placed sixth All-Around in the 2000 US Olympic Trials, sixth All-Around in the 2000 Winter Cup Challenge and first All-Around in the 1999 John Hancock US Junior Gymnastics Championships. Paul Hamm was second All-Around in the 2000 US Olympic Trials and first All-Around in the 1999 Pontiac International Team Championships.
The Texaco-sponsored Newman/Haas Racing team also has a connection to the sport of gymnastics through Texaco/Havoline/Kmart driver Cristiano da Matta, who held the lead in the CART Championship standings until dropping to third after being the victim of a mistake made by another driver on Lap 1 of the previous event in Japan. Da Matta was encouraged by his mother to pursue any other sport than the one his 14-time racing Champion father, Tony, participated in so da Matta was a member of a gymnastic club as a young boy. It wasn't long though that Cristiano began to follow in his father's footsteps and compete in and win races.
The Miller Lite 225, round 5 of 21 in the CART FedEx Championship Series, will take place on Sunday, June 3 at 3 PM local time. Newman/Haas Racing drivers da Matta and Christian Fittipaldi hope to bring the team its seventh victory at the historic Milwaukee Mile, an event that is promoted by team co-owner Carl a. Haas. Qualifying for the race will air 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN2. CART 2Day airs at 11 a.m. ET Sunday on ESPN2, while ABC-TV's live race broadcast begins at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 3.
