The second day of practice and qualifying started on a more positive note for Team Rahal drivers Max Papis and Kenny Brack. Both found themselves running near the top of the morning practice session. Papis would end up seventh in the morning with a fast lap of 61.665-sec./103.975 mph. Brack slid down the speed chart late in the session and ended up 16th at 62.493-sec./102.597 mph. Both drivers were in the first half of the qualifying session. Papis jumped from 11th at the start of the session to the fifth spot by breaking the 62-second barrier. Papis would eventually finish ninth on the opening grid with a fast lap of 61.605-sec./104.076 mph. A potential faster lap was lost when the Miller Lite car clipped the wall in turn 6 on his last lap bringing out the checkered flag. Even with the mishap Papis claimed his seventh top-ten start of the 2000 season. In the Shell car Brack found more speed but not enough to crack the top-ten. His fast lap of 61.968-sec. was good for 16th on the starting grid. It marked just the third time this season that Brack failed to qualify in the top-ten.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard "I was trying hard on the last lap but I clipped the wall. I spun right after that and I lost a lap that I though might have been a tenth of a second or two faster. One good note is we got out of the slow group (first qualifying session) for Laguna Seca. In this series, it is hard to move up into the fast group on a street circuit. Actually the track was better this morning for traction. In the afternoon, the rear end wanted to kick out and spin the tires. This track is tough on equipment with the walls and the shifting. I think there was a lot of attrition here last year and that could happen again on Sunday. I want to make sure we take the Miller Lite car to the finish."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard "We made a time gain today. Just a tenth or two faster and we could have been in the top ten. That is how competitive this series is. I think we are getting up to speed here at Vancouver, but we need to be faster if we want to challenge any of the leaders on Sunday. I am feeling more comfortable on this track. It will be a long race on Sunday but you can't depend on luck to move up in the points paying positions. We have to make the car faster."
