TORONTO, ONTARIO . . . Team Rahal drivers Max Papis and Kenny Brack overcame early mechanical problems in the morning practice to post the ninth and 11th fastest times respectively on the first day of practice for the Molson Indy Toronto.
Papis ran among the leaders in the afternoon session holding a spot in the top-five before dropping to ninth fastest overall with a lap of 106.736 mph.
Brack, the CART points leader saw limited time on track in the morning but rebounded to post the 11th quickest time in the afternoon with a lap of 106.548 mph.
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) -
"We got behind this morning with new engine settings. We actually didn't get a full lap until an hour was past. So with just a few laps, it's tough to achieve a good setup immediately. This afternoon, we had to make many changes and I finally got a clear lap on one set of tires. I think we jumped to fifth. Then we made more changes and new tires at the end but the red flag stopped the session. We made some improvement today but we can still go further. Ever since Portland, our Miller Lite team has worked well together. Cleveland didn't that we were fast because of the steering arm breaking in warm-up and the car wasn't right for the race. But I think we're on the direction to getting the car back like at Portland."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "Today is Friday the 13th and it
felt like it. It was kind of how things have been going for us on Fridays and Saturdays lately. The last two races we have had fires in those days. Now today, we had trouble in the morning and only got in seven laps. On a track like this it is hard to catch up. The grip usually gets better with each session and we weren't able to work the car much this morning. The Ford Cosworth guys have been working hard to get the engine back to the previous setup after the court decision (with the pop-off valve) last week. It's been hard on all of the manufacturers with the changes. The car was improving this afternoon and I ran a couple of good laps before we changed to the new tires. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to run the new tires due to the late red flag. So we'll have ready to go Saturday morning to catch up."
