CHAMPCAR/CART: Team Rahal Portland Saturday qualifying

#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard Papis finished the morning session seventh with a fast lap of 59.002-sec./120.138 mph. Papis and the Miller Lite car were in the second half [fast] of the qualifying session. A loss of grip was the primary struggle the Miller Team faced. Even with a change of springs and wing adjustment, Papis couldn't get the problem corrected and Papis posted a fast lap of 58.864 sec./120.420 mph which put him 13th on the starting grid. A disappointed Papis reflected on his afternoon. "We had understeer most of the session and the car was sliding around too much. We thought we had a good car after this morning but things didn't go well in qualifying. It was disappointing because I thought we had a competitive car this weekend, but the weekend isn't over. We can still make up a lot of ground in the race and that is my goal."

#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard Brack and the Shell crew picked up the pace in the morning practice posting the fifth fastest time of the practice session at 58.953-sec./120.238 mph. Brack stepped up the effort in the second qualifying session posting a fast lap of 58.098-sec./122.008 mph, good for fifth on the grid. "We ran out of fuel with two minutes to go and that might have cost us a faster lap," said Brack. "The car felt good for most of the qualifying session. I had a little understeer in turns four and five but we adjusted the front wing before our final run and that helped us. It's a shame we ran out of fuel when we did. I was on a good run and didn't hear the crew call me in and then it was too late. We have a good position and we will be in the mix tomorrow."
