LEXINGTON, OH . . . Team Rahal drivers Max Papis and Kenny Brack spent the first day of practice for Sunday's Miller Lite 200 (Noon EDT on ESPN) working through mechanical problems and incident plagued sessions.
Brack the CART point's leader could muster only the 21st best time in the morning practice turning a lap of 117.348 mph. The handling on the car improved dramatically for the afternoon practice and Brack posted a top-15 time with a lap of 120.370 mph.
Papis battled a turbo problem in the morning and handling problems in the afternoon. Papis turned a fast lap of 118.624 mph in the afternoon session. Papis has driven the Miller Lite car to back-to-back top-five results at Mid-Ohio finishing fifth in 1999 and fourth in 2000.
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "It was disappointing today. We thought we had a good package coming into this race. The car feels lazy in the turns. It rolls too much. We had some problems with the engine today. We had (turbo) boost trouble in the morning and a few more problems in the afternoon. We just didn't get enough time to sort out the car. We know the direction to go to fix the handling of the car. The rear end of the car is not consistent on this track. It's sliding around too much. This place is not easy to get a car perfect. It has so many different kinds of turns with the elevation, off-camber and high speed. You have to get a good compromise."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We struggled in the morning with the car, but we made good progress in the afternoon. I think we have a top five car but the time sheet doesn't show it. We had a brake problem this afternoon and we had to stop in the middle of the practice to fix it. I saw a lot of the exhaust of the Penske cars today. We're not where those cars are right now but I can see us improving on Saturday. It's critical to get the balance of the car just right at this track. It has so many different types of corners. I'm glad the temperature cooled off a little today. In the car on the track, you don't feel the difference in the temperature. But sitting in the pits, with the crew working on the car, that's when you really feel the heat. It isn't nice when it's that hot."
