The second day of the Shell 300 at Laguna Seca found Kenny Brack moving to the front of the field. The Shell car was fifth fastest in the morning session with a fast lap of 116.556 mph. Max Papis encountered handling problems but managed a fast lap of 115.048 mph, which was good for 17th overall in the session.
For the final qualifying session both Team Rahal cars were in the quicker second session. Papis fought an understeer in the car and made a mid-session adjustment to the ride height prior to his final run. Brack and the Shell crew discovered a leak of transmission fluid just prior to the session and so the Shell team picked their spots waiting several minutes for clear track at the start of the session. Brack managed to improve almost a full second from Friday qualifying and claimed the fifth spot on the grid with a fast lap of 117.542 mph. Brack posted the exact same time/speed as Juan Montoya. Since Montoya posted his lap first he claimed the fifth spot over Brack.
As Brack took to the track on a fresh set of tires his gearbox gave out and his session was over. The session was red flagged for the safety crew to retrieve Brack's car.
As the field went green Papis was primed for a run at the front of the field. Just as Papis was beginning his fast lap Jimmy Vasser spun off track in Turn 3 and brought an end to the session.
Brack's sixth place start is his 13th top-ten start of the year. Of the top-six title-contenders in the CART points Brack and Gil de Ferran are the only two to start in the top-ten. For Papis the 14th spot was a disappointment but following his strong showing in 1999 at Laguna Seca the Miller crew was confident of a strong race showing.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"We improved out car quite a bit today in qualifying. Unfortunately we never got a chance to get a chance to show it. With the red flags at the end of the session we were never able to run a fast lap. It is a disappointment because I know our car is better than 14th. That pretty much sums up our luck this year -very bad."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"Unfortunately I ended up with a box full of neutrals in qualifying. We did manage to get a lot out of the car today and we did improve a lot. It makes a big difference to be in the second qualifying session. My guys figured out that we had less than 20 minutes worth of qualifying this weekend with the problems we had with the car on Friday and today. I feel really good about being sixth considering the problems we had. It is important to be up front at Laguna Seca and we managed to accomplish that today."
