MONTEREY, CA . . . A postcard perfect day at historic Laguna Seca Raceway proved to be a trying day on track for Team Rahal drivers Max Papis and Kenny Brack. Severe handling problems with both team's cars relegated the Miller Lite and Shell cars to 12th and 16th overall.
Team Rahal ran seventh and 12th in the morning session with Papis turning the fastest lap at 114.877 mph and Brack turning a lap at 114.148 mph. Neither Rahal driver was able to better their top practice times in the afternoon session.
The day was paced by Team Penske drivers Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran who turned their fast laps in the afternoon. Jimmy Vasser who was introduced at a press conference as the Shell driver for 2002 between the morning and afternoon sessions posted the sixth fastest lap of the day 115.429 mph.
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "The Miller Lite car had too much oversteer this afternoon. The car was better this morning when we had a 1:10.1. I expected to be in the low 1:09s this afternoon but the car was just not stable in the rearend. I've had good cars here at Laguna Seca before so I believe we can get the car back in the right position. It's not going to easy though with this field."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We're just not fast right now. That's upsetting. We're trying to get the car balance and we have some oversteer. We're not in the position we want. It's tough to get the car right where we want it. But we have to get better on Saturday. Our engineers are making changes that should improve the car. Hey, the future is now for me. We have to get this Shell Ford up towards the front of the field. Passing is very difficult here."
