From the time the sun came up over Surfers Paradise the Saturday proved to be a bizarre day. First the weather went from a downpour in the morning to picturesque blue skies and temps in the 80s for qualifying. Then there was the tale of two different sessions for Team Rahal. The morning rain showers kept Papis and Brack on the sidelines as nothing was to be gained from running in the wet slick conditions. When the showers ceased halfway through the morning session both Rahal cars logged limited laps. Papis managed to post the third fastest lap of the session 95.906-sec./104.915 mph while Brack was sixth at 96.879-sec./103.862 mph. As the weather conditions improved both Rahal teams were optimistic for the qualifying session, especially with both cars in the second faster group. The advantage of the second session turned out to be non-existent. Three different red flag stoppages disrupted the flow of the session and made it impossible to build tire temps or a rhythm. Neither Brack nor Papis managed to better their times from Friday and therefore fell to 12th and 15th on the grid. In the case of Brack he lost additional time when he served an eight-minute penalty for causing a stoppage on Friday.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard "That was as frustrating a qualifying session as we have had all year. How many red flags did we have? Everytime I got a good lap going a red flag would come out. It was difficult to judge the corners with our braking at the start of qualifying but we improved that over the course of the session. We did fight some wheel spin off the corner and the grip wasn't as good this afternoon as it was this morning."
#8 @!Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard "The penalty from Friday really hurt us because of the other red flags in the session. I just didn't have enough time to get a clean lap. I'm not sure if the wind had an effect on the track but the grip wasn't as good. The car just didn't feel as good today as it did on Friday. I don't know how the race will go. This place looks pretty tight for the race and you know what that means - contact."
