Brush With Wall Derails Team Rahal Drivers In Australia Qualifying
SURFERS PARADISE, AUSTRALIA . . . Team Rahal drivers Kenny Brack and Max Papis endured a frustrating qualifying session for Sunday's Gold Coast 300 (1:00 PM EST Tape Delayed ESPN) that saw both drivers brush the wall. Brack was able to make it to the pits and the Shell crew repaired the damage enabling the Shell car to return to the track where he eventually turned the 13th fastest lap at 107.325 mph. Papis however was not so fortunate. The Miller Genuine Draft car was damaged to the extent that it could not be repaired quickly and returned to the track. Papis was forced to sit on course and watch the final ten-minutes of qualifying and he ended the session 14th overall at 107.222 mph.
Patrick Racing driver Roberto Moreno captured the pole and deprived Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran who will start second of a critical point in the championship. With two races remaining de Ferran leads Team Rahal's Brack by 26-points in the CART championship.
Max Papis (Miller Genuine Draft Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We had quite a good car and I thought it would be in the top ten. Then I locked up the right front tire getting into the last turn. And the car just washed out and into the wall. It was tough because we didn't get to run the last 10 minutes when the track is usually at its best. Hey, we have come from behind here before when we got second in 1999 and then last race at Laguna Seca. This race is always pretty wild so we can never up. You have to think positive. Anything can happen."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We made a little change to the car before the session and it turned in a little quicker than before. It was on a warm-up lap and it banged the wall on the left side. The left front suspension took the hit. The Shell team did a good job to fix the front end in the pit lane and I was able to get back out with a good car. They put it back together and it worked fine. We just didn't get an opportunity to make the adjustments to the track that we wanted. It was basically one set of tires and no real changes. The disadvantage was we didn't get to run the whole session. The lap we got was pretty good and I might have gotten another few positions today. But we didn't have a pole car."
