Rain Limits Practice in Australia

SURFERS PARADISE, AUSTRALIA . . . Heavy rains limited the morning practice session to a handful of laps and essentially canceled the afternoon practice for Sunday's Gold Coast 300 (ESPN Tape Delay 1:00 PM EST).

Max Papis managed to turn a dozen laps, mostly in the rain, and posted the 11th fastest time with a lap of 99.729 mph. Kenny Brack and the Shell team never posted a timed lap and parked the car rather than risk substantial damage to one of their two Ford-Cosworth/Lola's.

Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "Today we did twelve laps and we learned something about the car. I feel it was very similar to last year's situation. Saturday will be a very hectic day for everybody. Everyone will try to get as many laps as possible. If the engineers have done their jobs at home in the setup, then, with just one and a half hours in the morning, the cars should still go well in qualifying. We have been here enough in the past to know the proper way to go on the chassis. A big thing will be that the track will be green (fresh) from the rain. With very little rubber on the pavement, the track surface will be tough to get a hold of in the rear. Traction will be important coming off the corners."

Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "This is the same thing as last year, raining on the first day. It's not the end of the world. It's the same for everybody. Maybe it gains us something in the end. Who knows? We'll see tomorrow how we'll run. I think these long straight-away's should be good for our Ford engine. Ford's horsepower will be an advantage here."
