FONTANA, CA . . . Kenny Brack and Max Papis both endured morning mishaps that left their Ford-Cosworth/Lola's with significant damage, yet they both finished the day posting some of the quickest times in practice for Sunday's CART season finale (3:30 PM EST Live on ESPN) at the California Speedway. Brack, second in the CART points standing and the series leader in wins was fourth fastest in the morning session despite only running half of the allotted time. Brack finished the day fastest overall with a fast lap of 230.597 mph which he turned during limited track time in the afternoon. Brack is seeking his series leading seventh pole of the season. Max Papis piloted the Miller Lite car to seventh fastest in the morning session and 12th fastest overall with a lap of 227.999 mph. Team Rahal is searching for a series leading seventh win and eighth pole this weekend at Fontana. The winner of Sunday's season finale captures a million dollar prize, the largest purse in the CART FedEx Championship Series.
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "Today started in the with a big drama this when we hit the wall this morning due to a mechanical problem. Fortunately the only real damage was to the rear suspension and the mechanics did a great job to fix the car. We really focused on the race pace today and I think we are working good and that we will see the payoff on Sunday. It is important for us to have a reliable car on Sunday, one that is strong in traffic, because this will be a very close race with many close calls. At the moment we haven't dedicated any time to qualifying but we will spend some time on our qualifying set-up in the morning. I would love to have the point for the pole but as long as we start in the top-ten that is good enough for me. Remember they pay the million dollars for the win not the pole."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "The car is running great but of course everything can be improved. We had a small leak in the engine this afternoon and so we stopped running early. This morning we had a little bit bigger leak. Something went wrong with the engine and oil came out on the back wheels and I thought I had it saved and I tried real hard but in the end I it came around on me and I smacked the wall a ton. The Lola/Ford package has been running good on ovals all year but we just have to wait and see because you can't take anything for granted in this series. The car does feel pretty good. The new aero package does make quite a difference as we are quite a lot slower and there is a lot more turbulence when you are in traffic but the Shell car is running pretty good in traffic and I think we will be alright.
