CICERO, IL . . . Team Rahal's Shell driver Kenny Brack led 59 laps, including the last 19 of the race, en route to capturing his third CART win of the 2001 season this time under at the Chicago Motor Speedway. Brack's victory is his series leading fifth top-five result of the 2001 season and pushed his lead in the CART FedEx Championship Series to a commanding 22-point lead after 11 races.
Brack started eighth in his Ford-Cosworth/Lola but moved quickly through the field moving the Shell car into the top-five and taking over second after the first round of pit stops. Brack took the lead from Helio Castroneves on a restart on lap 122 with a daring pass on the low side of the 1.029-mile oval track. Brack led 40 laps until he pitted on lap 161 and then he worked his way back to the front of the field taking the lead for good on lap 207.
"We had been struggling for a few races, but everything came back today," said Brack. "This a very good victory for the Shell team. It was a schoolbook race. We had good pit stops and great strategy and the crew made the car better with each pit stop. The car was so good at the end it was like taking candy from children out there."
"It was a textbook race for Kenny and the Shell team today," said Team Rahal Chief Operating Officer Scott Roembke. "Kenny was outstanding. He made some great moves in the beginning of the race to get to fifth. Then the Shell crew came through when the pit stops were very good. We got him from fifth to second in the first stop. We adjusted the car for the loose condition and he did the rest. It is a big win after last week's misfortune."
The victory was the first for Brack since he posted his back-to-back wins at Motegi and Milwaukee. The victory is the fourth of the season for Team Rahal matching the mark set during Bobby Rahal's championship season of 1992. Brack leads CART in points (104), wins (3), pole positions (4), lap led (443) and is fourth in laps completed (1,526).
The day was productive but ended on a frustrating note for Team Rahal's other driver as Miller Lite pilot Max Papis drove spectacular race overcoming the qualifying woes of from his 25th spot on the grid to finish 13th. Papis was primed to score a points paying finish when his fuel pump failed on the final lap dropping him to 13th.
Team Rahal and the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series will resume with the Miller Lite 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH in two weeks (August 10-12).
