Canadian driver Alex Tagliani joins new CART entry Rocketsports Racing.
Montreal, Quebec, January 17, 2003 Team Player's announced today it has reached a deal with Rocketsports Racing owner Paul Gentilozzi that will see the transfer of driver Alex Tagliani to the team, which will be making its Champ Car World Series debut in the 2003 season.
The 30-year-old Tagliani had the best season of his Champ Car career in 2002, compiling 111 points and finishing eighth in the drivers' standings. In 59 starts over three seasons, Tagliani has five podiums to his credit, along with three pole positions.
"This is a new stage in my career and I'm excited to join Rocketsports Racing," said Tagliani. "I was very impressed with Paul (Gentilozzi) from the first time that we met. Not only is he an astute businessman, he also knows all the ins and outs of auto racing."
A product of the Player's Driver Development Program, first in the Atlantic series prior to making the leap to CART in 2000, Tagliani will continue to have close ties to his former team. He will sport a Player's logo on his new driver's suit and helmet, and Player's will bolster its involvement in the Champ Car World Series by coming on board as an associate sponsor of Rocketsports Racing.
"We are pleased that we have been able to fulfill our mandate to help Alex in his career pursuits in the Champ Car World Series and we are very proud of our association with Paul Gentilozzi," remarked Michael Bonelli, Sponsorship Associate for Player's Ltd.
"We believe that Alex will have a great deal of success with Rocketsports Racing. He has been a part of the Player's racing program since 1996 and we wanted to continue our association with him, even though he will be driving for a new team in 2003," added Bonelli.
