"The Marlboro car has been good all weekend and I'm so happy for the whole Team that we were able to grab the pole today. We haven't had any trouble and everything has gone smoothly. We get one point for the pole which is really important for the series championship given it is so competitive (Castroneves now has 30 points tying him for third place with de Ferran and Vasser). Honda has done a great job as evidenced by the top-four starting positions all belonging to Honda-powered cars. Now we need to execute tomorrow -- we just need to stay calm and cool and go for it."
-- Helio Castroneves, Marlboro Team Penske, #3 2001 Marlboro Honda
-- Reynard Pole position, 25.849 sec.
"I left my pit box and slowly accelerated but they (CART) said I was over the 50 mph pit lane speed limit; so I only got one timed lap for qualifying. While I wouldn't have taken the pole from Helio (Castroneves), I would have been second making it an all Marlboro Team Penske front row. Helio and I both starting up front bodes well for the race. Honda really delivered and gave us a great engine -- determination to succeed is one of their strongest points and that showed in qualifying."
-- Gil de Ferran, Marlboro Team Penske, #1 2001 Marlboro Honda Reynard
-- Qualified third, 25.993 sec.
¨ Today's pole is Helio Castroneves' sixth career Champ car pole and his second on an oval (the first was in Milwaukee in 1999).
¨ This is Castroneves' second pole position of the 2001 season; he also captured the pole in Long Beach and went on to win the race (fourth caChamp car reer victory).
¨ Castroneves has qualified on the front row in seven of the last seventeen races.
¨ De Ferran has qualified in the top-five in the last seven of 11 oval races.
¨ This is Penske Racing's 82nd oval pole and its 129th overall pole, the most of any team in Champ car history.
