Penske Will Run Reynards Next Year

by Bob Judd

READING, Pa. -- The season finale at Fontana will be the swan song for the Penske chassis. Because Marlboro Team Penske won't race Penskes next year, Roger Penske announced today -- they'll race Reynards.

This is a big but expected change. Roger already said, when he announced next year's drivers Greg Moore and Gil de Ferran, that he was 99 percent sure that the most successful team in racing would not run a Penske chassis next year.

Roger said, "In planning our program for the future, we selected Reynard after evaluating all our chassis options. Penske Cars Ltd. of Poole, England, will work closely with the Reynard factory to develop the new chassis for the 2000 season for Penske racing.

The writing was on the wall when Marlboro Penske decided to race just one Penske chassis this season. These are the days of data acquisition, when empirical data from the track play a major role in developing a chassis race to race. And with just one car to go on, the Penske was at a serious disadvantage to, say, Reynard, which could draw on the experience of literally dozens of chassis at several teams.

Team Marlboro Penske, has a long and distinguished history including 99 race wins, 10 Indy 500 victories, nine national championships and 119 poles.

We shall miss this great marque in Champ Cars. But it is also the sign of a great team, that it continues to evolve and does what it has to do to win.
