INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Dario Franchitti and Team KOOL Green finished their pre-season testing program at Phoenix International Raceway on February 27 and 28. The two-day test was cut in half by a desert downpour that limited Franchitti to only 166 miles on Tuesday. TKG concentrated on finding an optimal race setup for the short ovals running a best lap of 21.2s, but Franchitti feels the car had more speed in it.
"We didn't really get a chance to make the car better," said Franchitti. "This is my first time at Phoenix so I was getting used to the track, it would have been nice to have another day of testing."
Team KOOL Green team manager Kyle Moyer agrees with Franchitti, saying the car can still be improved.
"We've made some big gains from last year's race setup (on the short ovals)," said Moyer. "But there is still more we can do to get the car to run quicker. We will take what we learned here and also look at what Paul and Michael did at Phoenix."
This was the team's final pre-season stop before the in-season ban of testing begins on March 1. Moyer believes Franchitti and the team had a very productive off-season despite using only eight of the ten allotted test days due to inclement weather.
"I'm very, very happy with our testing program," said Moyer. "The team has built good continuity and the relationship between Dario and the guys is really strong. We left two test days on the table but I don't think we need them. Dario has confidence in the car and the crew and we are all ready to get to Mexico for the first race."
The #27 Team KOOL Green crew is on its way back to its Indianapolis shop to prepare the car for Round 1 of the CART FedEx Championship Series which will take place at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico on March 11.
