VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Team KOOL Green would love nothing more this weekend than to duplicate their stellar performance at last year's Molson Indy Vancouver, when Dario Franchitti sat on the pole with a track record and teammate Paul Tracy led Franchitti across the finish line in a TKG 1-2 sweep. The race is the final Canadian event of the year and the third of three road course races before CART heads to Europe for inaugural oval track events in Germany and England.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 2nd / Finished 1st at Vancouver in 2000; currently 9th in the standings with 65 points)
"There's a great atmosphere around the event in Vancouver and coming to my home country of Canada is pretty exciting. I've always run well at Vancouver and hopefully we can get another win for Team KOOL Green. We won there last year and we need to do it again. Winning in Canada is big for me and to repeat that this year would be awesome. The layout of the track changes every year and that makes the event even more interesting."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 1st / Finished 2nd at Vancouver in 2000; currently 6th in the standings with 81 points)
"We always have a great time in Vancouver. Last year's one-two finish for Team KOOL Green wasn't quite the way I would've liked it obviously, but hopefully we can turn it around this year and come out of the weekend with a lot of points. I would love to win in Vancouver again (won in 1998). I love the place, I love the town; it has so many special memories for me. The track is very unforgiving, it's difficult to pass so you have to try and qualify up front. Setup is a challenge there, but it is a great place to go racing with a marvelous crowd."
Last year's Molson Indy Vancouver saw Team KOOL Green record its fourth 1-2 finish since 1997. Canadian Paul Tracy sped across the finish line ahead of teammate Dario Franchitti to earn his third race win of the 2000 season and the first in his homeland since 1993. It also marked back-to-back victories for the Canuck who claimed Road America two weeks earlier.
Dario, who won the Vancouver race from the pole in 1998, claimed his second pole position in three years at last year's Molson Indy and earned the distinction of being the track's new qualifying record holder. Dario posted a fast lap of 106.144 mph (1:00.405).
TKG is a force to be reckoned with on the street circuits, having won on seven of CART's eight temporary courses: Long Beach, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, Vancouver, Australia and Houston. In fact, nine of the last twelve wins recorded by TKG were earned on temporary street courses.
