ELKHART LAKE, WI (August 18, 2000) – Team KOOL Green’s Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy set the third and 13th fastest time in provisional qualifying today at Road America. Franchitti, whose first CART win came at Road America in 1998, was essentially happy with the setup on his car from the start and spent the day fine-tuning his car. Tracy, meanwhile, spent the morning practice making adjustments to get more grip in his car. Those adjustments appeared to be paying off in qualifying, as he set a lap 2.5 seconds faster than in practice. Unfortunately, while pushing for an even quicker lap, Tracy dropped a wheel off the track and went into the tires. He was unhurt and the car suffered only minor damage.
Gil de Ferran had the quickest car of the day, turning a fast lap of 1 minute, 40.392 seconds (145.159 mph). Michael Andretti, defending pole sitter the last two years, was second fastest on the day, with a lap of 1:40.401.
The 25-car field returns to the track for practice tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., with final qualifying beginning at 1:45 p.m. The 55-lap Motorola 220 takes the green flag at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast on a tape delay this Sunday on ABC-TV at 4:00 p.m. (All times are Eastern.)
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(13th with a lap-time of 1 minute, 41.947 seconds / 143.282 mph)
“It’s a shame because I had a good lap going. I just tried to give it too much going into the last corner and I got in too deep, dropped a wheel off (left front) and once I got a wheel in the grass there was no slowing down. It’s frustrating, but I think we’ve got a good balance on the KOOL car. We’ll try a few more things in practice tomorrow morning and then we’ll give it all we’ve got in qualifying.”
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(3rd with a lap-time 1 minute, 40.477 seconds / 145.036 mph)
“It was very frustrating this morning. Basically, we had a good setup and we needed to fine-tune it, but we couldn’t do it because there were lots of red flags and traffic. So we’re getting pretty close to having the KOOL car where we want it. But it was a similar situation in qualifying. Not with traffic, but every time we tried to give it a go with new tires – red flag. It’s good to be third today, but I’m sure everyone is going to go faster and raise the bar that much higher tomorrow. So we’ve got to improve a lot if we want to be at the top tomorrow.”
