MOTEGI, JAPAN (April 9, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti will start respectively from the 10th and 11th positions on the grid for tomorrow's Firestone Firehawk 500 from Twin Ring Motegi, at 1:00 p.m. Japan Time. The race will be broadcast live this Friday at midnight on ESPN in the United States and on TSN in Canada.
Gil de Ferran earned his fifth career pole position in today's qualifying, setting a new track record with a lap of 25.463 seconds at an average speed of 219.000 mph. Second quick around the 1.549-mile oval was Mauricio Gugelmin in 25.530 seconds (218.425 mph), while Max Papis was third fastest with a time of 25.547 seconds (218.280 mph).
Tracy, meanwhile, clocked his fastest lap of the weekend in the single-car qualifying session. He was also the highest qualifier of the Honda-powered cars shod with Firestones with a lap of 25.637 seconds (217.514 mph).
Franchitti was just four one-thousandths of a second slower than his teammate with a time of 25.641 seconds (217.480 mph).
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (10th with a lap-time of 25.637 seconds / 217.514 mph)
"I'm pretty satisfied with the way the car handled. I thought we could have run a low 6 (meaning 25.6 seconds) and that's what we did. I was hoping we could have got a high 5, but we didn't get there. I'm happy though because we've got a good race car that can run strong long laps. In fact, I'd say we've got a better race car than a car for qualifying right now. I'm ready for this race. It's been a long off-season and I'm pumped to do my best for Team KOOL Green."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (11th with a lap-time of 25.641 seconds / 217.480 mph)
"The car had a slight push in Turns 3 and 4, which we've had all weekend. I can't really complain because the Team KOOL Green engineers and I went into qualifying with the car as good as we could have gotten it. I don't think we could have got much more time out of the car. As for race setup, we ran on full tanks this morning and we were pretty happy with the balance of the car. You have to be very careful in traffic though because of the disturbed air."
