WEST ALLIS, WIS., (June 5, 2000) -- Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy shuffled up and down the leaderboard at today's Miller Lite 225, but ended the day respectively in sixth and 15th position. Juan Montoya earned the victory in dominant fashion, leading 179 laps and finishing 1.016 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Andretti with Patrick Carpentier third.
Montoya's first win this season and the eighth of his two-year Champ Car career came from the pole position. Franchitti started alongside Montoya, but his #27 KOOL was not handling well throughout the race. Tracy had climbed to as high as third before making his second stop of the race. But on his second stop (lap 160) he was assessed a penalty for not having all four wheels under the yellow line on the pit entrance. He was assessed a drive-thru penalty under green-flag conditions, losing a lap to the leaders. Montoya, who recently won the Indy 500, led after the final round of pit stops and was not really threatened to the checkered flag.
Tracy did not score any points today, but keeps the championship lead with 59 points. Roberto Moreno finished fifth in the race, moving into second overall with 52. Jimmy Vasser also failed to score points and drops from second to third with 48. Montoya jumps from 10th in the standings to fourth overall with 44, tied with Michael Andretti.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(Started 6th / Finished 15th / Currently 1st in the standings with 59 points)
"We were doing quite well up until the penalty. We just had a great stop and thought that we could have picked up a couple more spots with a little luck. Juan was out of the way, he checked out. Michael was strong too, but I thought that we had the car to finish third, fourth or fifth... no problem. The KOOL car was reasonable and seemed to be pretty consistent."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(Started 2nd / Finished 6th / Currently 10th in the standings with 28 points)
"We had a loose car all day. I was turning the KOOL car right more than I was turning left. We sorted out the problem a little bit on the last set of tires, but I could not run close to anybody. We had a problem in the warm-up that we never really got to the bottom of before the race. The guys did a good job in the pits. It was frustrating, but we managed to score some points. I'm looking forward to getting on with the road courses on the schedule. Hopefully, we can start scoring seriously."
