Tough Day For TKG At Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif. - Team KOOL Green drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti both failed to finish today's race and were credited with 18th and 19th place respectively.
Tracy started fifth and had stayed with the leaders until he got spun around and knocked into the pit lane wall by Helio Castroneves. The contact on lap 50 bent Tracy's suspension, which caused him to go off course on lap 60 and ended his race.
Franchitti overcame his 22nd starting spot to move into a points-paying position before his left-rear tire was cut down by Christian Fittipaldi's front wing when Fittipaldi tried to pass him on the inside of turn two on lap 59.
Max Papis took the win today, his second victory of the season, in a race that was run to a two-hour time limit (76 of 83 laps) due to the multitude of full-course caution periods for on-track incidents.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 5th / Finished 18th / Currently 11th in the standings with 76 points)
"What put me out was bent suspension from when Castroneves turned me around in pit lane. What's more upsetting is the way this series is being run. Castroneves turns me around in the pit lane and he doesn't get penalized for it. I've got bent suspension and I'm out of the race, when I had a podium car."
BARRY GREEN, TEAM KOOL GREEN OWNER:
"I happen to think it's the Penske game. De Ferran pulled out in front of Dario (Franchitti) in pit lane here last year. Castroneves pulled out in front of Michael Andretti earlier this year at Indy. And now Castroneves was clearly beaten out of the pits and he turns Paul (Tracy) around in pit lane. I'm just surprised Roger Penske allows these things to happen. It's about time that CART took a stand and stood up to their game."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 22nd / Finished 19th / Currently 5th in the standings with 105 points)
"With the strategy that we were employing I think we could have finished in the top ten. Which, after starting 22nd and with the car basically being a bucket, would have been quite an achievement. I definitely need to sit down with the Team KOOL Green engineers and see if we can figure out what went wrong this weekend. The good news is we had a great car last week on the streets of Houston, so I think we should be in good shape for Surfer's Paradise."
