VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (September 1, 2000) -- Dario Franchitti of Team KOOL Green clocked the fastest lap and teammate Paul Tracy was third in today's provisional qualifying session at the Molson Indy Vancouver. Franchitti covered the 1.781-mile temporary street circuit in a time of 1 minute, 1.067 seconds for an average speed of 104.993 mph. Tracy recorded a quick lap of 1:01.476, an average speed of 104.294 mph. Fellow Honda driver Gil de Ferran splits the two KOOL cars, having set a fast lap of 1:01.231 (104.712 mph)
Franchitti is going for his second consecutive pole position of the season, following his track record run two weeks ago at Road America. He is looking for his second pole in Vancouver, having won from there in 1998.
The second qualifying session will be run tomorrow from 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be preceded by a morning practice session, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The 90-lap race starts at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, and will be televised live by ABC. (All times are Pacific Daylight Time)
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD: (3rd with a lap-time of 1:01.476 seconds / 104.294 mph)
"Team KOOL Green did a great job today. I had a fast car and, obviously, so did Dario. I caught a red flag on a fast lap on my first run, then caught some traffic on a fast lap during my second run. Finally, on my third run, I was able to put in a fast lap. It feels good to be third. As for tomorrow, I feel if I can get three laps together I'll be as fast as anyone out there. The Molson Indy people have done a good job improving the track year after year. It was pretty good today, although the rain made it a little slippery. But it should get better as the weekend goes on."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD: (1st with a lap-time of 1:01.067 seconds / 104.993 mph)
"That was a good session for all of Team KOOL Green. The car was quite good from the outset this morning. Our main problem is the tires are taking a long time to come up to temperature. That's great for a long run during the race, but it makes qualifying a little difficult. You have to do a number of laps -- like six or seven -- to get the temps up, whereas it usually just takes two or three. But I'm pretty happy to be on the provisional pole -- it was a very good lap. But it's the same old story: It's great to be on pole on Friday but everybody is generally faster on Saturday unless it rains. So we'll sit down with the Team KOOL Green engineers tonight and figure out some things to try tomorrow in order to be faster."
