Team Kool Green Off To Australia
SURFERS PARADISE, Australia - Team KOOL Green travels to Australia for the final street circuit race of the season in the FedEx Championship Series, as drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti both seek to score their second win on the streets of Surfers Paradise, and give team owner Barry Green another victory in his home country at the Honda Indy 300.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 4th / Finished 17th at Surfers Paradise in 2000; currently12th in the standings with 73 points)
"Right now we have to focus on moving back into the top ten in points and Australia is a good place to start the charge. In my eight starts there I've never qualified outside the top ten (including six top-four starts), I won in '95, and last year I was driving a car that was on rails before we encountered some trouble. I know Team KOOL Green will give me the car I need to get the job done, so if we can avoid any problems we should do well. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Gold Coast, it is an amazing place for this event and I really enjoy going there every year."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 3rd / Finished 25th in Surfers Paradise in 2000; currently 5th in the standings with 105 points)
"I can't wait to get to the Gold Coast and start enjoying the Australian beaches and lifestyle. The Surfers Paradise race is definitely one of the highlights of the year -- on and off the track. It's not a bad race course, for starters, with a couple of long straights with good passing opportunities at the end. And Team KOOL Green has traditionally done well there. I got pole in '98 and won from the pole in '99. I could use another weekend like that. (Scored maximum points for pole, laps led and race win.) I'm looking forward to running up front again in Barry's home race (team owner Barry Green is a native Australian). This layout is very demanding because of the curbs and chicanes combined with the fast straights. The atmosphere around the event is incredible and rivals any in the series. The Australian fans are very knowledgeable and they pack the grandstands all weekend."
Team KOOL Green has strong Aussie ties, and is usually a home crowd favorite at Surfers Paradise. Team owner Barry Green and John Anderson, race strategist for Paul Tracy, are both native Australians and both began their racing careers down under. Barry's early stints as a driver included karts, stock cars, Formula Ford, and Formula 3. Anderson worked for several Formula 5000 teams and won four championships in nine seasons.
TKG Recognition: Dario Franchitti has been named as a finalist for the Greg Moore Legacy Award. The award honors the late Canadian star and reflects the driver who best typifies Moore's legacy of outstanding talent on track as well as displaying a dynamic personality with fans, media and within the CART community. And two members of Paul Tracy's crew are already picking up some year-end accolades from their peers. The Championship Association of Mechanics named Chief Engineer Steve Challis and Mechanic Ron Weaver to the CAM All-Star team, awards voted on by their fellow competitors. Great job!
